NOTE: In 1860 a Mary Waltermier, age 23, is a domestic in the home of Philip Groat-45, and his wife, Julia. In 1870 a Mary E. Waltermire, age 35, is still in the house of Philip Groat and his wife Julia, as a domestic servant.

NOTE: Letter from Mildred Sussell, 11 February 1996: "I'm beginning to agree with you that Mary Eleanor Waltermire, daughter of Jacob J. Waltermire and Anna B. Story, who was born 7 February 1826, may be the one who married Philip Groat. I have checked and double-checked all the Mary E. Waltermires we have been able to find and no other comes as close in age. I finally found her in the 1880 census, married to Philip Groat. Her age there would make her birth year ca. 1830 - only 4 years off. But why would she want to appear younger when she was married to a much older man? However, I believe she is the same Mary E. Waltermire who was in their household in 1860 and 1870, and she had aged each year! "They were probably a very respectable family, and in order to continue living in the same household after his wife died, they decided to marry. I'm enclosing a copy of my census history on Philip's family." (MS) family."

Mary married (MRIN:10416) Philip GROAT-25143 on 28 Jan 1873 in Ghent, Columbia Co., NY, USA. Philip was born about 1813.

NOTE: Mildred Sussell: "The only Philip Groat I found on censuses was born about 1813 and was married to Julia A. 1814. They had a daughter, Malissa, 19, in 1850. Hannah Groat, 60, probably Phililp's mother was in their household. In 1860 only Philip & Julia & Mary Waltermier, 23, are in the household." "In 1870 Philip and Julia and Mary E. Waltermire, 35, are in the household. Mary is called a "domestic servant" both times. It's my guess that Julia died shortly after 1870 and Philip married his housekeeper, born about 1835-1837. What Waltermire family had a Mary E. born about that date?"

MARRIAGE: To Anna Canfield. Recorded: First Baptist Church of Stanford, Bangall, T-Stanford, Dutchess Co., NY USA.

NOTE: (Letter from Mildred E. Sussell, 20 March 1998) "I believe I have found him (David Waltermire, Jr., who married 29 January 1829, Ann Eliza Canfield) in 1870 in Lenawee Co., MI. The only problem is, the son who is still with them is called "Wm.-32". Their youngest son would be William J.-22. David and Anna are the correct ages. I have not found them on the NY Census after 1850, when they were in Red Hook, Dutchess Co., NY, with children Cordelia-16, Catherine A.-11, George A.-9, David-6, and William J.-2. This was the only Waltermier/Waltermire I found in our 1870 MI Census Index."

HWW - I would think that this is our David Waltermire, Jr., and the "William age problem" is just simply an error, "22" instead of "32". Leave here for now. Later research may prove us right, or maybe incorrect?
