NEWSPAPER: (DKM) BLOSSBURG ADVERTISER, Fri., 22 Aug 1890:
The circumstances surrounding Alfred Hart's death sold Tioga County newspapers for weeks. On Tuesday, August 7, 1890, Alfred Hart was arrested and jailed persuant to a warrant issued by a Justice of the Peace, based on Mr. Hart's neighbor's Mortimer Rude's complaint that he thought Mr. Hart had poisoned two of Mr. Rude's cows by Paris green on July 31st. A few days later he posted bond, was freed, and was reported to have attempted to shoot Mr. Rude and an Oregon Hill merchant, but "fortunately the cartidges missed fired in both cases." Mr. Hart then went upstairs to his room across the street, slit his throat, and jumped out the window. While awaiting his death, the newspapaers published increasingly lurid and elaborate accounts of his actions and various "confessions", alleged to include the poisoning of cows as well as the murder of a peddler a year before. The day of the supposed attempted shooting, and of Mr. Hart's attemped suicide, "Mrs. Alice Hart appeared before Justice Schopp and swore out a warrant for assault and battery against Mrs. Eugene Hager..."

NEWSPAPER: AGITATOR, 26 August 1890: Since Mr. Hart had severed his windpipe and gullet, he was unable to talk or eat. The incident took place Saturday, August 16th; a physician arrived the afternoon of the next day. The defendant was discharged August 25. (Quarterly Sessions Docket of D. W. Reynard, No. 42, August Sessions, 1890). Alfred Hart died 28 August 1890. One correspondent reported, "...the trouble started some time ago in a lawsuit involving twenty-five cents, in which Hart, the prosecutor, was beaten and had to pay the costs..."

NOTE: It was difficult to determine Solomon's parentage. After due deliberation and considering his age it was decided to place him in the family of Petrus E. Empie, 2nd child. (Barbara Empie Greene and Herman Witthoft think this is correct.)

(BEG - 1 June 1998) I think we should note the fact that "this Solomon could be the son of Solomon, now listed as a "probable son of Johannes and Anna Maria Kilts." Since the placement is very tenuous, however, for now we are leaving young Solomon, b 1810, in Peter's family - subject to further change.

BIRTH: Born on family's "Sharon Hill" farm, Jan 31, 1816, HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY, William E. Roscoe, p xxii, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA: Empie, Gideon, p.o. Sharon Hill, farmer, 375 acres, born on same farm January 31, 1816; wife, Susan Kilts, married Nov 24, 1840; children five - Sophia E., Myron O., Luther, Martha H., and John J. Father, John I. Empie.

MARRIAGE: Reformed Church, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA.

OCCUPATION: His granddaughter, Susie Empie, daughter of John Jay Empie, says her grandfather was "a singing" schoolmaster.

CENSUS: 1855 NYS - Gideon Empie, and, wife Susan, appear on June 1855 Census, Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY: Gideon, age 39, Susan, age 32, Sophia, age 12, Myron O., age 11, Luther, age 7, Martha, age 3, John Jay age 1. Years lived in Sharon for Gideon, 39, for Susan, 32.

BIOGRAPHICAL: (From Barbara Empie Greene): The farm that Gideon and Susan owned had been passed down through the family by several deed transactions. It moved from "John Empea", of the Town of Sharon, Schoharie County to "John Empie Junior" of foresaid Town and County on June 24, 1807. (One hundred acres). On Feb. 20, 1815, another 30 acres was deeded to "John Empie Junior" by "Joh. Empie of Town of Sharon, County of Schoharie and State of New York, Farmer". These transactions are identified as being between Johannes Empie, who married Anna Maria Kilts, and his son, John Empie of Sharon, who married Sophia Shaver. On May 23 1856, the same land was deeded to Gideon Empie, son of John Empie of Sharon, who in turn deeded it to his son, Myron Orlo Empie on March 16, 1905.

The 1855 NYS Census shows that Gideon, Susan and their children were living at that time with John of Sharon and wife Sophia Shaver on that land, Lot #349. It is probably safe to assume that after the change of ownership in 1856, when John was 79 years old, John and Sophia continued to live with their son and daughter-in-law until they died. Gideon and Susan were 39 and 32 respectively at the time of the transfer. (Children: Sophia, age 12, Myron O., age 11, Luther, age 7, Martha, age 3, John Jay, age 1.)

From HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY, NEW YORK, 1713-1882, William E. Roscoe, p. xxii, Sharon: Empie, Gideon, p.o. OBITUARY: (HWW) From my mother's files. On the bottom is written: December 1, 1926. I think it is my Grandfather Wellington Shafer's writing. Name of newspaper is unknown: JOHN KILTS

The people of the village of Argusville and surrounding community were quite surprised and grieved when word came from the hospital at Albany that the spirit of John Kilts of Argusville had passed on to the Great Beyond, following an operation for kidney and bladder trouble. While he had been complaining for some time, only for the past four weeks was it necessary for him to have the assistance of his cousin, Mr. Wellington Shafer, who visited him and cared for his physical needs and comfort.

He was born in the late fall of 1858, only son of Conrad and Betsy Kilts on their home farm one-half mile south of Argusville where he always resided.

(Page 131)

After the death of his father he lived with his devoted mother for several years, and after her decease lived alone, having never married. He was very much attached to his parents and home. To him there was "No place like Home." He was possessed of an unassuming, quiet and meditative mind and disposition, always attending to his own affairs, yet, at the same time was kind of heart, helpful and willing to render aid when in his power so to do. He kept himself well informed on the current topics of the day, well educated and informed on many important subjects. He was a close and thorough reader of the Bible, and therefore could converse intelligently and readily on its many phrases and teachings, and endeavored to practice its teachings. In early life he united with the Lutheran Church at Argusville and was devoted and helpful in her interests. For many years he seved as organist, having, as it were, a splendid musical gift, a splendid asset for one's comfort and joy if properly used to His glory. His funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Shafer, Argusville, who kindly, gladly and willingly gave the friends and neighbors the use of their home for the occasion, Saturday, Dec. 3, 1926, at 2 p.m. Rev. A.R. Empie officiating. His body rested in a splendid casket amidst a nice array of flowers, donated by his loyal friends who held him in high esteem and spoke of him as "a good man." Buried in family plot at Argusville. Gordon and Lapeus undertakers in charge.

Surviving is an aged aunt and several cousins. He sleeps until the resurrection morn, when all those who sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. Fairwell till we meet again. A.R. Empie

NEWSPAPER: (HWW) From another newspaper clipping from my mother's files.

Name and date of newspaper unknown. At end of article is a handwritten 1926. I've only included the portion of the "Argusville" news pertaining to John Kilts: ARGUSVILLE ...John Kilts, aged 69 years, who was taken to the Albany hospital, November 23, mention of which was made in a previous issue, died there November 30. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of Leon Lappins at Sharon Springs and later to the home of Wellington Shafer where the funeral was held Thursday, December 2, at 1 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. A.R. Empie of Cobleskill. Interment was in the family plot in the Argusville Cemetery. Mr. Kilts was the only child of the late Conrad and Elizabeth Somers Kilts. He always resided in this vicinity and was by occupation a farmer. He had been identified with the Lutheran church from childhood and always took an active part in the church work having been a member of the choir for many years. Mr. Kilts had also served as organist. He was active in the Sunday School work and being well versed in the Bible, he ably assisted as teacher of different classes of the Sunday School in which he will be missed. He is the last one of an honored and respected family. Cousins are the nearest of kin to survive and with many friends mourn his departure.

NOTE: (HWW) Wellington Shafer, John Kilts' cousin, (my grandfather) was willed the real estate - house, dairy barn and land. (I don't know the acreage.) Henry Lyker and I visited the farm, October, 1993, and the house is in poor shape - needs a lot of work. If someone had about $75,000 it could probably be restored and modernized. The barn is in very poor shape. Part of the roof is gone with the resultant rotting and sagging of the wood sills. Might be salvaged? I found an old bee hive, a hollowed out log about 18 inches in diameter and 18 inches high. No top or roof to it. Also, I appropriated about a dozen pieces of slate from the barn roof.

I have the John Kilts piano, now an heirloom piece. Only one problem. It is in high pitch, not 440. When John died in 1926 he willed it to my mother. We lived in Bronx, NYC and my mother had a piano. She loaned his piano to the Lutheran Church in Argusville to use in Sunday School. When the church disbanded, "closed up shop" in 1976, I told the Lutheran Synod who had taken title to the church property about the loan of the piano in 1926 and asked for its return. They agreed. (I also got the church bell and sign board from the church.)
