History From America's Most Famous Valleys

The Pictorial Field-Book of The Revolution
by Benson J. Lossing
Volume l
Published in 1859 by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York
Illustrations of the history, biography, scenery, relics and traditions of the war for independence
with eleven hundred engravings on wood by Lossing and Barritt
chiefly from original sketches by the AUTHOR.

The two volume set is about 1700 pages long and contain 1,100 graphics. Parts of the first book are posted. The primary focus of this site is upstate New York. The rest of the fist book pertains to other states and will not be posted on the site. The second book is about the war in the south and will not be posted on this site unless I run out of material to post.

Mr. Lossing (1813-1891) spent five years on the project; first traveling over 8,000 miles through Canada and the original states, then interviewing anyone who could give him information on the Revolution. He painstakingly sketched important places and transferred these images to wood. Mr. Lossing worked from the quiet of his farm at Dover Plains, NY.
