BIRTH: Gravestone of John Empie reads: "Sophia Shafer, his wife, Mar 17, 1789 - Sept 17, 1865."

PARENTS: (Barbara Empie Greene) Uncertain. Was she the daughter of Marcus Schaeffer and Annaje Kniskernof Schoharie? They had a daughter, Sophia, baptized in 1791, who would be about the right age, but there aredifficulties with this placement because of the dates involved. That baptism was recorded as follows:BAPTISM: Recorded: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, Schoharie Co., NY USA. Sophia, b. 17 Mar 1791,bp. 10 Apr 1791. Parents: "Marcus Schaeffer, Anna" Sponsors: "Johannes Kniskern, Sofia Kniskern" If this is thesame Sophia and she was actually born in 1789, as per tombstone, then there is an unusually long time betweenher birth and baptism. On the other hand, perhaps the tombstone date is in error. We know that the gravestonewas erected at least 45 years after Sophia's death, since it also lists the dates of death for her son, Gideon, and hiswife. By then the correct date of her birth may have been forgotten. (BEG)

MARRIAGE: There is a marriage recorded at the Reformed Church of Lawyersville, T-Cobleskill, Schoharie Co.,NY (formerly German Reformed Church in New Rhinebeck, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY.): "John Empie marriedSophia Shaver, 25 Oct 1808." Is this a record for the marriage of the Sophia born 1789, or of Sophia, born 1791, orare both Sophias the same person? There are several indications that these two Sophias might be one and the same.1. We can find no records of a birth for another Sophia in this time frame. 2. It is highly unlikely that 2 Sophiaswould marry 2 John Empies about the same time, especially since we can find no record of a second marriage, or aJohn Empie of the right age who was unmarried in 1808. 3. The second son in Sophia and John Empie of Sharon'sfamily is named "Marcus." This was the first time this named appeared in the Empie family, but it is the name ofthe father of the Sophia born in 1791. Until evidence is found to the contrary, we are placing Sophia as a daughterof Marcus Schaeffer. (HWW)

John was born 10 Feb 1775 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY and was christened in , , NY,USA. He died 26 Nov 1863 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA and was buried 29 Nov 1863 inSharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

BIRTH: Edith Becker, p 3 says: "John of Sharon", b. 2-10 1775, d. 11-26-1863" Tombstone reads: "John Empie,Feb 10, 1775 - Nov. 26, 1863" "Mary Taily, his wife, died Apr. 9, 1807, aged 27 yrs." "Sophia Shafer, his wife,Mar 17, 1789 - Sep 17, 1865."NOTE: Known as "John of Sharon" Empie.

DOCUMENTATION: Edith Becker's genealogy of the Empie Family published before 1962 places "John ofSharon" in the family of Johan Jacob Empey, who was the youngest son of Johannes Empie and Elizabeth Snell. E.Keith Fitzgerald in his 1984 genealogy and David Kendall Martin's, SNELL FAMILY, p. 53, have followed Mrs.Becker's lead, both also listing John as the oldest son of Johan Jacob and Barbara Bayer. (BEG) (BEG) However,my family tradition has always been Kilts oriented, saying that he was the son of Johannes Empie and Anna MariaKilts. We now have 3 pieces of evidence that prove that the latter placement is correct. Since no churchbook birthrecord could be found for John's birth in 1775 (possibly because of the upheaval in the area where he was born dueto the Revolutionary War), other records were needed for proof of his parentage. With the help of David KendallMartin, the original documentation that Edith Becker used was re-examined. It was at once evident that the entryhad been mis-quoted. The reference, AMERICAN ANCESTRY, Vol. II:36, 1887 reads: "Empie, Marcus Williamof Churchtown, b. 1824 (m. 1846 Sarah A. Kling); son of John of Sharon, NY, b. 1775, d. 1864 (m. Sophia Shaver); son of John of Palatine, b. 1744, d. 1824 (m. ______ Snell); of Huguenot descent." This quote clearly puts Johnof Sharon in the family of John of Palatine,not in the family of his brother, Jacob. (Note that the author hasconfused the two Johannes Empies and has listed the wife of John of Palatine as "______ Snell," when she was infact the wife of Johannes' father, Johannes Empie of Stone Arabia.) (BEG) The deeds for the original SharonEmpie farm also provide evidence for this placement. The first deed covers the sale, for the sum of $200.00, of100 acres of land designated as part of Lot 14 of the Lawyers' Patent. The indenture was contracted between "JohnEmpea, of the Town of Sharon in the County of Schoharie and the State of New York, Farmer, party of the firstpart, and my son John Empea, Jr., of the above mentioned place aforesaid, Farmer, of the second part." This deedwas dated, July 24, 1807. The second deed read the same, but covered the sale of Lot 13 and was dated February20, 1815. The dates on these two deeds make it impossible for Johan Jacob to have been the John Empea whosold the farm to his son, for Johan Jacob was killed at the Battle of Oriskany in August of 1777, 30 years earlier!(BEG) There is one other piece of evidence which helps establish John's parentage. It is contained in a storyhanded down through the Empie family and recorded by Grace Diefendorf Empie in her family record, WHO'S WHO TO ME. "John Empie's father, with his little son, John, was near Schoharie Fort one day when he realized unfriendly Indians were following him. He stealthily hid little John under the potato vines in the field, then wentright on through the field. The Indians caught him and scalped him without hitting him in the head first, as theyusually did. As soon as possible, he crawled to the Fort and told them of his son. They at once went to the potatofield, and found the little boy patiently lying under the vines waiting for his father's return as he had been told todo." This story could not have happened if Jacob had been the father of the little boy, John, because John, born Feb10, 1775, would have been about 2 1/2 years of age when Jacob died, Aug 7, 1777 at Oriskany. For a child thatyoung to be that far from home the summer of 1777 (when potato vines were thick) was unlikely, and it would beeven more unlikely that a 2 year old could lie hiding for a long period of time without crying or moving. DOCUMENTATION: HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE CO., 1882, by Wm. E. Roscoe, p xii, reads: "Gideon Empie,whose father is John I. Empie." Gideon Empie was John of Sharon's son by his second wife, Sophia Shafer. It wasJohn of Sharon's son by his first wife, Mary Taily, who was named John Isaac Empie, and was always referred toas "John I. Empie", whereas his father was known as "John Empie of Sharon". (BEG)BIOGRAPHICAL: Accounts of John of Sharon and his son, John Isaac, are given by Rev. Marcus Kling, in thebook, "A REUNION OF MINISTERS AND CHURCHES, HELD AT GARDNERVILLE, May 14-17, 1881," Pub.Philadelphia, Pa., Lutheran Publication Society, 1881. Under the section, p. 162, "Memories of our Departed",Rev. Kling writes: JOHN EMPIE In some respects he was a remarkable man; and divine grace made him just whathe was, a burning shining light in the world and a power in the church. As early as 1808, being then about thirty-threeyears of age, after a long and fearful struggle, he found Christ precious to his soul. At that period, as relatedby him, spiritual darkness hung over the churches, and experimental piety was unthought of by the many andprofessed by very few. Hence in his troubled state of mind, he hardly knew the nature of his anxieties, whom toconsult, or where to find relief. But the Lord by His spirit was surely leading him in the way he knew not of, andfinally brought him into the light and liberty of the gospel of Christ. He was remarkable for his unwavering,undeviating perseverance in the course of piety from that time till the day of his death. With him religion was aliving, controlling principle, to be carried out in all the activities and relations of life. That responsibility heaccepted, and in a remarkable degree carried out, without turning to the right or the left. CHILDREN: Children of John Empie of Sharon were born on the Empie farm, part of which is now Slate HillCemetery, Town of Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY. John's father, Johannes Empie, moved to Sharon from StoneArabia in about 1800 where all of his children including John had been born. He sold the Sharon farm to son Johnon 24 July 1807, just before John's first wife, Mary Tally died. Thus, John was living there after 1807 and all ofhis children by his second wife, Sophia Shaver (Shafer) would have been born there.

Grace Empie's records show aNancy Empie who married Grace Empie's records show a Nancy Empie who married HenryFrederick as one of the 5 children of John of Sharon, but no Anna. Since Nancy Empie's SlateHill gravestone lists her as born 1810 and the wife of Henry Frederick, we know that Nancyexisted. We believe that Nancy and Anna are the same child, Nancy and Anna being possiblevariations of the same name (BEG).

I found the following inCady's Records, marked "1855 Census". This was the first New York State Census. (The Federal Census aretaken on the "0" years, like 1850, 1860, etc., but the New York Census are on the "5" years, like 1855, 1865, etc.)In addition to the usual data it gives the place of birth, how long resident in Schoharie County, and the person'soccupation or relationship to the head of the household. (I think this "Henry" is "Henry (John Henrich) Sgt.Schaeffer Judge", my RIN 2708.) She says that Rebecca was born in Schoharie Co.. The 1855 Census says, "Vermont". This is the only discrepancy between her information and the 1855 Census. Yes, I would like to "shareany information that may be of interest to you" (me). I would appreciate whatever you have. Do you know whohis father or mother might have been? Did the sisters marry and stay locally? To whom? I have about 2500 Shaferson my computer file, but I'm not able to identify "William". I looked at some church books for marriage andbaptismal records, but no information so far. I have other records to review though. Also, I'm going to check thefamily in later Census. When did Russell move to Iowa?
