Matthew Warner's will definitely refers to David as his son, and brother of John, Hanna, Eve, Mary, Sarah and Deborah. However, the church record states that David was a son of Matthias Werner and Sarah. Thus it appears that Maria Elisabeth died some time after the birth of Deborah (or the birth of Netta 7 December 1794, reported by Cady), and that Matthew married someone by name of Sarah prior to or in the year of 1805 when he begins to appear in the church records as "Matthew Werner and Sarah, his wife".

(Loyalist) Nicholas was granted Patents to Lot 34 in 2 and Lot 5 in 5, Osnabruck as well as acreage in Mountain Township, Dundas Co. Ontario Canada. "Military Service Land Grant - 500 acres - Mountain Twp., Dundas Co., Ontario Canada". (It is present day Lunenberg, Ontario.)

RESIDENCE: Resided Lunenburg, T-Osnabruck, Stormont Co., Ontario Canada.

BIOGRAPHICAL: Nicholas was a brother to Frederick of Osnabruck, U.E.L. He may have died about 1839 as the Land Abstract, Township of Osnabaruck, Stormont Co., Ontario Canada notes the registration of a will.

DEATH: "Sept. 12, 1838 the corpse of Nicholas Schaefer of Osnabruck died Set. 11, 1838 (?) aged 85 yrs 11 mos 19 days". PAF program computes d/o/b to be 23 Sept 1752 with a note, "possible error due to Gregorian calendar change". We have his d/o/b as 20 Sept 1752. This is close enough to identify that this is the Nicolas we are talking about. (Source of death information unknown at this time.)

U.E.L. - United Empire Loyalist

MILITARY: Served in "Butler's Rangers" from 1778 to 1784.

EMIGRATION: He emigrated to Osnaburck Township, Stormont Co., Ontario Canada, in the early 1800's and resided at Lunenburg, Ontario, near his brother, Nicholas. "When living in Canada, he declined to accept some 1400 acres or equivalent cash as compensation for losses during the American Revolutionary War although his children successfully made this claim twenty years after Frederick's death".

BIOGRAPHICAL: "Frederick Schaffer supported the English during the Revolution and with his brother Nicolas, joined Butler's Rangers in 1778. He was in Col. Ten Broeck's company in the raid & massacre in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania in July, 1778. In 1780 Butler's Rangers swept thru the Schoharie & Mohawk Valleys. Frederick was captured and held at Johnstown but escaped in October 1780 and made his way to Niagara. He was discharged at Niagara January 1784 and returned to New York. He took his family to Canada in the fall of 1800."

(THE MOHAWK VALLEY STARINGS AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by Sterling O. Kimball, 1998) Martha Foland says that he came back to the USA. He did, but according to the previous paragraph, "He took his family to Canada in the fall of 1800." (And he was buried there.)

"The people in this area (Osnabruck and Cornwall Townships) know each other and have intermarried over the past two hundred years." Gordon writes: "Recently, (1998 ?), I drove up to a man mowing the lawn at Frederick's farm and asked if this was Frederickk's farm." The answer was, "Yes, do come in". "(and after 200 years?)" Another example of people knowing one another and their ancestors is: Gordon Stinson writes, "I stayed at a farm Bed and Breakfast (Wert family). I said to the people, "Your forebears rescued mine on 22 May 1780 and together were chased by 1700 Rebel riflemen with our mothers and babies on horseback." They answered, "Yes, I know, my cousin wrote a book about it."

At the Battle of Cobleskill, May 1778, the Indian chief, Joseph Brant, with a party of Indians and Tories, lured the Americans into an ambush, killing twelve, wounding two and destroying numerous homes and farms. CPT Patrick commanded a detachment of soldiers from the 6th Continental Regiment of Massachusetts and about 25 soldiers from the 15th Regiment of Albany Co Militia."

DEATH: From the SCHOHARIE REPUBLICAN newspaper: "Schafer, John H., At Cobleskill, on the 6th inst., John H. Schafer, in the 83rd year of his age. Mr. Schafer was one of the first settlers of Cobleskill, and passed through many years of hardships and sufferings with its early history. He was one of the party who had an engagement with the Indians in Cobleskill during the Revolutionary War in which the brave Capt. Patrick and most of his followers were cruelly massacred. He was a worthy member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and died in the faith of the Redeemer.--S.R.-May 14, 1833".

MILITARY: Served in the Revolutionary War along with his brothers John, Henry, and his half brother Jacob.

MILITARY: MILITARY RECORDS OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY VETERANS, WAR OF REVOLUTION, George H. Warner, 1891; "Fifteenth Regiment, New York Levies and Militia, Lambert Shafer, did service under Miller". (MHW) "On 27 Jul 1832, Lambert Schaefer, resident of Townsend, Huron Co., and 80 years of age, appeared in Norwalk, Huron Co., OH, before the Superior Court to apply for benefits under the act of Congress passed 7 Jun 1832. In the affidavit written at this time he stated that he entered the Continental army in 1775 as a private for nine months into a company commanded by Captain Christian Braun or Brown, in a Regiment commanded by Colonel Peter Vrooman. He first served at Fort Stanwix and from there he went to and served at Fort Edward and from thence he went to Lake Champlain. At the end of the said nine months he was honorably discharged, the discharge of which was lost. Lambert then served in the Militia of the State of New York commanded by Captain Brown and Colonel Vrooman from 1776 to the time of peace of 1783. He served in this militia for 3-4 years. He signed his name to this affidavit as Lambert Schaefer. His pension certificate was issued on 22 May 1833 for $80 per annum. This pension act was to commence on 4 March 1831, and so he received two years retroactive for 4 March 1831 to 4 March 1833 of $160.00, plus a half year from 4 March 1833 to 4 September 1833 of $40.00. His date of death was not recorded within these records, but this could indicate that he died around September 1833."

RESIDENCES: (Marjean Holmes Workman) "In his pension papers, Lambert stated that since the Revolutionary War he lived in Coverskill [sic] for between 20-30 years, from thence he went to Madison Co., NY, where he lived as much as four years. From thence he moved to Florence from thence to Eldridge and from thence to Townsend in the County of Huron, OH." "Although no deeds have been found for Lambert in Huron or Erie Counties, OH, a life lease was recorded. On 29 June 1822 Briant Milliman of Townsend granted a life lease for certain considerations and for the sum of one dollar, for land in Lot No. 23 to Lambert Shafer and Mary Shafer, his wife of Townsend. This was one acre in the "southeast of my improvement in the lot No. 23 in the second range of the lots in said township and ten acres of land on the south east corner of the same timbered lot likewise ten apple trees and three cherry trees said Shafer and his wife is to have the house he now lives in." This was to be held by Lambert and Mary as long as they lived in said house. Witnesses were Daniel Butler and Amos Milliman."

DEATH: (Marjean Holmes Workman) "It is believed he died after the 1840 Census, in which it appears he may be living with his son Lambert, Jr., in Florence, Erie County, OH. However, the last positive proof of him still living is an affidavit filed by him on 23 February 1833. "
