Major General Israel Putnam "Put"

Physical description of General Putnam. He was not a tall man, but very stout and strongly built, and he had a remarkable head of white busy hair.

General Putnam was born at Salem, Massachusetts, on the 11th day of January, 1718. He was indebted to nature, more than education, for a vigorous constitution, for mental endowments, and for that undaunted courage, and active enterprise which were his prominent characteristics. Much confidence was reposed in his military prowess and judgment, and he was remarkable for a faithful perseverance in all the duties of his station, and for the most undeviating principles of honor, humanity, and benevolence.

Here was a general who seemed to be respected by his peers and loved by the men he commanded.
