BIRTH: Born on the Homestead farm of his father, John F. Staring, which has been in the family since the American Revolution, 1792. The farm is located near Fultonville, Glen, Montgomery Co., NY USA.
BIOGRAPHICAL: Abraham was a farmer in Glen Township, just west of Fultonville, Glen, Montgomery Co., NY USA.
The 1865 Census recorded his frame house as being valued at $900, that he had 3501 acres and was working 316.
He later moved into Fultonville, Glen, Montgomery Co., NY USA. His house which has been restored is shown in The History of Montgomery Co.
He was one of a group from the south side of the Mohawk River who formed the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Fultonville and subscribed $50 toward building the church on 8 March 1838. He had seat number 53. In February 1855 he was on a committee to rebuild the church after a fire and was elected trustee 15 December 1856 and 12 January 1858.
Abraham resided on his father's farm near Fultonville, and resided there nearly his whole life. He gained a high reputation as one of the most intelligent and practical farmers of the Mohawk Valley. He was a man of shrewd, observing character and was credited with many original sayings. A few years before his death he retired from active life and settled in Fultonville, NY, where he died 8 October 1881.
His ancestor Nicholas Staring was the founder of the American family.

OCCUPATION: He spent all of his adult life on the farm where he was born and came in sole possession of same on the death of his mother; buying out his brother Charles' share in the same.

BIOGRAPHICAL: He was one of those men who always looked ahead, caring little or nothing of outmoded affairs. It was owing to this nature that he was instrumental in securing a general Post Office at Lykers.

He improved his buildings and bought twenty acres of land from the Leonardson farm adjoining the south side of the field known as the Flats. He was the first in his section to erect a silo and the first to purchase a pure bred Holstein sire for his herd.

He served his native town of Root as Commissioner of Highways for eight years and built many iron bridges.

He compelled the West Shore Railroad Company, by Supreme Court suit, to construct a solid retaining wall at the place known as Little Nose to prevent vehicles from sliding off the highway onto the railroad tracks. He was offered a bribe of $17,000 to allow the Railroad Company to put up more poles and wire instead of building the wall, but he refused and the wall is there for all to see.

He purchased the property known locally as the Old Hotel and store, rented the store part to Bundy & Smith for a general store and converted part of the building into a cheese factory which he operated for many years.

He also bought five acres of land from the Barney Vrooman Estate, known locally as the" old place".

In later years he purchased, in conjunction with his son, Henry R., a farm of 100 acres at Carlisle Centre, NY, known locally as the "Tillapaugh farm".

He was an ardent Democrat.

BIOGRAPHICAL: After graduation from high school he returned home and worked on the farm until 1900, and on the invitation of his cousins, Guy and Ella Clark, he went to their home in Sandy Hills, (now Hoosick Falls, Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., NY USA.

He first secured employment with Finch & Clark doing clerical work, then for several years he was employed in several positions with the Union Bag & Paper Co., and during one of these years he was one of the organizers of the Kingsbury Club, a social organization incorporated under the laws of New York State. He was elected a director and secretary, resigning when he accepted a position as Manager of the Granville Electric Light & Gas Co., Granville, VT. Due to ill health he gave up this position and returned to Hudson Falls, NY, and went back to work again for the Union Bag & Paper Co.. After a couple of years he resigned his position of cashier and went to Berlin, NH, with the Burgess Sulphite & Fibre Co., and then returned to Hudson Falls and joined: the F.R. Eyer Paper Co. He finally gave up this position and returned home to Lykers, NY, and took up farming at Carlisle Centre, NY.

He took an active part in the political affairs of his home town of Carlisle.

He was County Committeeman for many years, was Supervisor for three terms, and served as County Auditor and Purchasing Agent for one term.

He joined the Cobleskill Lodge of F.& A.M., No. 394, in April 1919 and was an active member until his death.

After giving up farming he went to live at the home of his sister, Harma, and husband Ralph Becker in 1938 and died there.

He is also 80 years of age and has been a Mason for many years. Upon retirement they went to live in the Masonic Home, Utica, Oneida Co., NY USA.

Stephen Kling, a former well-known resident of Argusville, died at his home in Kinderhook, where he moved in 1874. Death was due to Bright's disease.

The original house built at this homestead site is still occupied. Part of this house was built under the direction of the original owner, Samuel Clement, about 1836. This was also the home Henry's son, Aaron, until April 1, 1920 and of his great granddaughter, Ruth Louise Clement Ruder, until 1989.

BIOGRAPHICAL: He came to Michigan in the Spring of 1835, the first of the family to do so. He worked with cabinet makers andd carpenters in Detroit, MI, and although he purchased large tracts of land in Pittsford Twp., Hillsdale Co., MI, he seems never to have lived there as did the rest of his brothers.

The original government deed to his father's homestead was issued to Samuel Clement on August 1, 1837 and signed by the president of the United States, Martin Van Buren. The original house built at this homestead site is still occupied. Part of this house was built under the direction of Samuel Clement, about 1836.

A letter dated July 11, 1840, written to Aaron Clement by his son Henry describes the building of the house on the above mentioned homestead in Section 32, Wheatland Twp., Hillsdale Co.; 10611 E. Bacon Rd., pittsford, MI 49271. This was also the home of Henry's son, Aaron, until April 1, 1920 and of his great granddaughter, Ruth Louise Clement Ruder, until 1939.

He lived with his parents until 1840, when he built a house on his farm in Section 34, Wheatland Twp., Hillsdale Co., MI USA. (Home was: Section 34; 1091 Waldron Road, pittsford, MI 49271).
