Aaron died 16 Mar 1868 in Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., MI, USA, and was buried 18 Mar 1868 in Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., MI, USA.
NOTES for Aaron:
SOURCE NOTES for Aaron:
BIRTH: Woestina, Rotterdam, Schenectady Co., NY USA.
OCCUPATION: Aaron, like his father and brothers, was a farmer.
In 1794, Aaron's older brother, Samuel, bought from Christopher Fiegenheim, a New York grocer, 500 acres of land in Montgomery Co., NY. The next year, the three brothers, Samuel, Peter and Aaron, assumed the mortgage on this land jointly, and probably moved to their new farm in Root, Montgomery Co., NY, about that time. In 1796, Samuel Clement died, leaving two sons, John S. and John Fairley, both of whom were raised in Aaron Clement's family. The older brother, Peter, moved to Ontario Co. , NY, about 1820.

BIOGRAPHICAL: Among the three brothers, Aaron appears to have been the favorite, for his father left him his land and tools to the exclusion of the other sons; and his uncle, Aaron, left him his property. Perhaps he had more schooling than the rest of his family. His son, Cornelius, stated that "he obtained a very good common school education in the common branches for those times." At another time, however, Cornelius wrote that Aaron was "honest and faithful, consistent in his calling... yet was not a man who was gifted." The fact that he served as secretary and treasurer of various church organizations, drafted agreements for his illiterate neighbors, and was custodian of a small circulating library kept in his house indicates that his learning was somewhat greater than that of most members of his community.

MILITARY: On June 10, 1808, he was appointed ensign of a company of New York militia of which John Roof was Lieutenant Colonel. On May 27, 1812, a little less than two months before the War of 1812 started, Aaron was appointed Lieutenant of a company in the 138th Regiment of Montgomery County infantry commanded by Captain Colyer. On June 22, 1818, the Clerk's Office of the county mailed him notice of his appointment as Captain of a company in the same regiment. Apparently, then he served during the War of 1812, not as Lieutenant, as has generally been believed, but as a Captain. It is unlikely that he saw any military action during the war, although he took part in an expedition to Sacketts Harbor on Lake Ontario which lasted from September 7, 1814 to November 16, 1814.

CHURCH AFFILIATION: Aaron was prominent in the affairs of the local Reformed Protestant Church, in the Montgomery County Auxiliary of the American Bible Society, and in various missionary societies.

RESIDENCE: Lived at Lykers, Root, Montgomery Co., NY.
In 1837 he moved to Pittsford, MI USA. The Lyker Genealogy says that the whole family moved to Pittsford, MI USA.

Marlene Amalfitano writes, 12/2/2000: "In 1835 the entire Clement family moved to southern Michigan, along with some Alpaugh cousins and there is an extensive genealogy of them."

EMIGRATION: His son, Cornelius, writes: "Father and mother had, in early life, known something of the hardships and toil of pioneers; but the desire of keeping the family near each other, and the temptation of cheap land for each a farm, and the children's welfare, lead them to break from the old home and loving associations of friends and kind neighbors, and they came, in the decline of life, to build another home, in what was to them at the time, the Far West."

On October 25, 1836, Aaron Clement arrived in Detroit on his first trip to the Michigan Territory to see for himself its possibilities. After looking around Bean Creek Valley, the area recommended by his sons, he finally bought on November 2, 1836, from John and Asenath Gustin, 240 acres of partlly improved land in Section 3 of pittsford Township, paying $2,700.00.

During the next several years, he bought 791 additional acres of land in Hillsdale Co. and was given in 1852 by the US Governent for his services in the War of 1812, 40 acres more.

On April 29, 1837, he and his family, excepting Mary and Henry, who were married and remained behind, and Samuel and Christopher, who were already in Michigan, left Root, Montgomery Co., NY, for their new home. They arrived in Pittsford at 2:00 p.m. on May 18. Lycker, the fifth son, had driven a team and wagon from New York and had arrived a few days before the rest of the family. The daughter, Mary, with her family came to Michigan in May, 1838, and Henry arrived there in 1840. All of the children, except Samuel, who had settled in Detroit, settled on farms near their father.

BIOGRAPHICAL: From Daniel A. Wisner, 18 Redman Road, Milan, MI 48160-1615, 26 March 2001:
Unlike most of the early settlers, Aaron Clement moved his family to Michigan in mass from an outstanding situation. They lived, near Schenectady, NY, on a beautiful fully cleared and developed site overlooking the Mohawk River.

The reason always stated for the move to Michigan was that the old man wanted to have his twelve children to live nearby him on adjacent farms! The real reason may be that Aaron feared the possible adverse effect the transients traveling through the nearby town of Brown's Hollow on their migration west via the newly opened Erie Barge Canal might have on the family. Aaron apparently did not want his children marrying strangers and going their separate ways.

In the Spring of 1835 he sent Samuel, the fourth son, to Michigan to find and purchase land for the family. Later they moved in mass via the Erie Barge Canal. Lycker, the fifth son had driven a team and wagon from New York and had arrived a few days before the rest of the family. Aaron left my great, great grandfather, Henry, the oldest son, then near forty years of age, behind to dispose of the Clement family property, which he sold at an exeellent price.

Can you imagine starting over after raising twelve childre of your own, plus two foster sons of your dead brother?

Aaron lived to be ninety-four with all children except Henry and nearby. Henry lived about six miles away and Samuel lived in Detroit. However, are buried along with the rest of Aaron's children in the Locust Corners of Aaron's homestead near Pittsford, Michigan.

BURIAL: Locust Corners Cemetery, Pittsford, Hillsdale co., MI USA, alont with his 12 children and presumably his wife.

FAMILY REUNION: It is interesting to note that on 17 September 2000, the 107th Annual Clement Family Reunion had a tour of the Aaron Clement homestead and the fine brick home built by his son, Peter. It is interesting to note that the original home built on this site, unlike most pioneer homes, has been maintained nearly unmodified and is in excellent condition for a 164 year old painted wood frame house.(Donal A. Wisner. 26 March 2001)
