The Colonial Census of Palatines

The foregoing was taken from Documentary History of New York Vol. III by E. R. O'Callaghan, published by the State printer, Weed, Parsons & Co. of Albany in 1850. The list as originally published was not classified alphabetically, as arranged below,(!maybe he means by date!) but otherwise appears here exactly as found in the volume above mentioned. No change has been made in the spelling and many names will be found which have undergone changes in the years since 1710. The suffix "in" denoting feminine gender appears to have been used indiscriminately there by confusing the indiscriminately as to the real name. Possibly this was due to the ignorance of the custom on the part of English clerks who recorded the name. Wherever the "in" appears it should be constructed as meaning feminine gender as for instance Meyer (male), Merering (female). The lists are classified and will be in four sections, viz: The New York list, the West Camp list, the list of volunteers of 1711 and the apprenticed children of orphan list. These names are all that appear pertaining to the Palatine settlers published in Vol. II of Documentary History.
