1. Nicholas SHAVER was born in 1725 in Nassau, , , Germany. He died about 1805 in Matilda,
Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
BIOGRAPHICAL: Nicholas emigrated to America, naturalized in the Province of New York on 3 July 1789. A
Nicholas Shaver is mentioned in Sir John Johnson's rent rolls of the Kingsborough Patent (Lot No. 73W.), his rent
began 15 Mar 1769.)
REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Nicholas, along with his four eldest sons, refused to fight against the King of England.
The youngest son Jacob was often mistreated by the Rebels, in attempts to get him to reveal the whereabouts of his
father and brothers who were in hiding.
Nicholas Schaffer of Matilda is listed in Pringle's book, "Lunenburgh" as a sergeant of Butler's Rangers.
FROM SOURCES: There is no proof that Nicholas Shaver UEL from Matilda was related to Philip Shaver UEL
from Matilda. (So says Klass van der Baaren who has done a lot of research on both the families. He also says that
he got a lot of information on the Nicholas Shaver family from Denis Shaver, Calgary and Ella B. Chellis, Endwell,
NY.)

died on 22 Jul 1804 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.

2. Honas "Johannes" SHAVER (Nicholas) was born on 24 Jul 1753 in Palatine, Montgomery Co.,
NY. He died on 24 May 1828 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Onrtario, Canada and was buried on 26 May
1828.
BIRTH: Probably born in Stone Arabia, Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.
NAME: Other given names that appear for him are: "Hanes, Harmonius, Hones, Hanis, Hannes, John, John Sr.,
and John N".
OCCUPATION: Farmer.
MILITARY: In the Revolutionary War he fought as a private in the King's Royal Regiment of New York in
Captain Richard Duncan's Company, 1st Batallion, from 1777 to 1782. He lived in Turlock (sic Durlock), Tryon
County, New York and joined the K.R.R.N.Y. in August 1777 and in 1779 served as an Artificer at Sorel, Quebec,
Canada.
RESIDENCE: Because of his war service he was granted Patents to the West half of Lot 32, in the 1st Concession,
Matilda Twp. and the West half of Lot 25 (or "A") in the 2nd Range, Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario Canada.
CHILDREN: I have found the listed children from other sources, but he has nine children listed in "Loyalist
Lineages of Canada, 1783-1983", Toronto Branch, The United Empire Loyalists's Association of Canada,
Generation Press, and they are John H., George, Barbara, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary (Maria), Catherine, James,
Edward.
WILL: His last will and testament is on Microfilm of the Register Books of the Surrogate Court of Stormont,
Dundas & Glengarry, Vol. C, 1828-1842, pages 13-16:
1. Wife Jane Shaver gets her maintenance of the farm they are now living on, for her personal use West room in
the house and a stove in it and she is to be furnished with sufficient fuel. If she wants to move, the second son
George, will have to pay her 6 Pound Province Currency annually. Further she gets one chestnut coloured mare and
one house clock and all the property she brought to the house at his marriage; two cows, one heifer, four sheep and
one chest of clothing and all other effects she brought in.
2. The eldest son John Shaver gets the W 1/2 of Lot 25, Concession 2, Matilda Twp. and one ox cart. A set of
blacksmith tools and a "logchane" are to be sold to the best advantage and the money to be divided between sons
and daughters John & George Shaver, Barbara Carman, Hannah Jackson, Catherine Servis, Elizabeth Fader and
Mary Manhart.
3. The 2nd son George Shaver will obtain the W 1/2 of Lot 32, Concession 1, Matilda Twp., 2 horses, 1 cow, 1
heifer, 2 sheep, one waggon, 1 plow, 1 harrow, 1 bedsted, 1 "Feather" bed, 1 blanket, and 1 pillow, provided he
discharges his duties towards his stepmother Jane.
4. Daughter Elizabeth, wife of John Fraser of Matilda Twp. will receive 1 cherry chest left by her mother.
5. His apparel is to be equally divided between John and George.
6. The rest of the estate to be sold and the money equally divided between daughters, "Margaret my youngest
daughter exempted".
As executors were named John N. Shaver, James Sahver and "John H. Shaver my son of Matilda".

mentioned in her father's will, dated 25 July 1820. It is possible she died before this date, but I
think that the former is the answer, given name should be "Hannah", and one of the children
deleted as a duplicate. Further research should give us an answer.

4. John Nicholas SHAVER (Nicholas) was born in 1758 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. He died
on 17 Sep 1838 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
BIOGRAPHICAL: In the "Bathurst Courier, Oct. 26 1838:
Died at Matilda U.C. 17th ult. John N. Shaver Esq aged 81, he accompanied late Sir Johnson through the
wilderness to Canada at breaking out of the American Rebellion. Served in the Royal Yorkers, commanded a Co. of
Dundas Millitia at the Battle of Presq' Isle in 1812.
OCCUPATION: Farmer.
WILL: In his will (in Morrisburg Registry, #1274), dated 19 March 1838, registered 5 June 1840, he leaves to his
son Michael the W 1/2 Lot 37, Concession 1, Matilda Twp., under the condition that he will support John N.'s wife
Elizabeth and his daughter Charlotte.
To his sons George, Nicholas & James 2 pound 10 shilling.
To June Rattery (no relationship mentioned) one bed and bedding, one cow, two sheep.
As executors were appointed wife Elizabeth, son John Shaver of Matilda, yoeman, and Nicholas Wart of Matilda,
yoeman.
Witnesses were: John Mc Conell, James Mc Dougal Esq., & Sarah Ellwood, spinster, all of Matilda.
LAND: The 1/2 Lot 37, Concession 1, Matilda Twp., was bought by John Shaver 1 June 1803 from Allan Mc
Conell.
John married Elizabeth COOK. Elizabeth was born about 1768.
NOTE: In the National Library in Ottawa is an Upper Canada Land Petition (Reel C2807 "S" bundle 3/218) in
which Elisabeth Shaver, wife of John Shaver, daughter of John Cook, a Loyalist, late of the Royal Yorkers, asked
for 200 acres. The petition was signed 20 June 1797, by attorney Thos. Fraser J.P. (Received 20 June 1797,
recommended 200 acres 28 June in Council, 14 June '98 Warrant to Capt. Fraser).

5. Adam Nicholas SHAVER (Nicholas) was born on 15 Aug 1762 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.
He died in 1817 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
OCCUPTION: Farmer and Innkeeper at Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario Canada.
MILITARY: Adam Shaver of Matilda is listed as a corporal in the KRRNY in Pringle's book, "Lunenburgh" (page
391), while Nicholas Shaffer, his father, of Matilda is listed as a sergeant of Butlers's Rangers.
LAND: Because of his war service he received the E 1/2 Lots 33, Concession 1 and Concession 4, Matilda Twp., in
January 1789, as a Free Grant under Order in Council (Ontario Archives Microfilm Index Landgrants). The Patents
for these lots are dated 1 Sept 1797.
He received 16 Nov 1807 from the Crown the Patent on Lot 34, Concession 1, Matilda Twp.
WILL: Date of will, Dec 1816, and recorded 3 Jun 1817.
According to this will his wife, Catherine Shaver, would receive the household furniture and the use of the
dwelling house as long as she remained his widow.
"His eldest son living", Samuel Shaver, will receive 200 pounds plus the lot Adam resided on, the E 1/2 Lot 33
fronting the river in Matilda Twp., also 1/2 of E 1/2 Lot 33, Concession 2, Matilda Twp., and E 1/2 Lot 26,
Concession 7, Matilda Twp.
The 2nd son, Levius Shaver, will receive 200 pounds, plus E 1/2 Lot 34 fronting the St. Lawrence in Matilda
and 1/2 of the W 1/2 of Lot 33, Concession 2 and the W 1/2 of Lot 26, Concession 7, Matilda Twp.
His daughters, Rachel Shaver, Viny Shaver and Dianah Shaver will each receive 1 milch cow and an equal
portion of the other effects when they marry.
As executors were appointed: Jacob N. Shaver, Michael Carman Jr. and his son, Samuel Shaver.
Adam married Catherine COOK in Apr 1784. Catherine was born in Feb 1763. She died on 15 Feb
1820.
They had the following children:

MARRIAGE: I found the reference that Catharina married a Philip Empey of Osnabruck in "
Sons and Daughters of American Loyalists".
Catharina married Philip EMPEY. Philip was born about 1786.

IDENTITY: He was listed in this family in "Sons and Daughters of American Loyalists".
Nothing more is known about him at this time, 3/6/2000.

Ontario, Canada. He died on 19 Aug 1879 in Mountain, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
OCCUPATION: Farmer.
RESIDENCE: He moved from Matilda to Mountain Twp., Dundas Co., Ontario Canada, in March 1836 with 10
children.
CENSUS: 1851 Census - Mountain Twp. He is described as living in a log house on Concession 4, Lot 11 - 125
total acres, 100 acres in wood, age 57, married, farmer, born Canada.
CENSUS: 1861 Census - Mountain Twp. He is described as living in a log house, built 1833 on Concession 4, Lot
11C - 75 total acres, 35 acres improved, age 66 married 1816, farmer, born Canada.
William married Catharine WERT on 21 Jan 1817. Catharine was born on 10 Jun 1797 in , , ,
Canada. She died on 7 Sep 1893.
DEATH: I have entered a date of 7 Sep 1893, but with a question mark (?).
William and Catharine had the following children:

+ 128 M i. Reuben SHAVER was born on 6 Mar 1818 and died on 1 Apr 1904.
129 F ii. Amanda SHAVER was born on 6 Jan 1820 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario,
Canada. She died in 1880.
CHILDREN: Had five children, but nothing more is known about them at this time.
Amanda married Isaac BEACH on 27 Feb 1849. Isaac was born in 1822. He died in
1906.
RESIDENCE: Lived in Grenville Co., Ontario Canada, Rockford, IL, Emporia, KS, and then to
Winfield, KS, in 1871.
130 F iii. Angeline SHAVER was born on 22 May 1822 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario,
Canada. She died on 17 Nov 1894.
MARRIAGE: Unmarried.
BURIAL: Van Camp Cemetery. (Where is this?)
TOMBSTONE: Angeline Shaver 23 May 1822 - 17 Dec 1894.
+ 131 M iv. William Hamilton SHAVER was born on 14 Oct 1824 and died on 4 Dec 1897.
+ 132 M v. E. Ira SHAVER was born in 1826.
133 M vi. Simeon SHAVER was born in 1828 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
Simeon married Nancy RUTHERFORD. Nancy was born about 1828.
134 M vii. Silas SHAVER was born in 1831 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
CHILDREN: Had four children, but nothing more is known about them at this time.
Silas married (1) Laura A. FORRESTER. Laura was born in 1837. She died on 9
Jun 1863.
BURIAL: Van Camp Cemetery. (Where is it located?)
TOMBSTONE: Laura, 9 June 1863, 26 yrs, wife of Silas Shaver.
Silas also married (2) Mrs. YORRY. Mrs. was born about 1831.
NOTE: Mrs. Yorry was a widow with 2 daughters when she married Silas Shaver. Nothing
more is known of her or her children.
135 F viii. Mary Ann SHAVER Twin was born on 18 Aug 1833 in Matilda, Dundas Co.,
Ontario, Canada. She died in 1909.
CHILDREN: Had four children, but nothing more is known about them at this time.
Mary married William MULLOY. William was born in 1830. He died in 1902.
+ 136 M ix. Nicholas SHAVER Twin was born on 14 Aug 1833 and died on 14 Mar 1917.
137 F x. Adeline SHAVER was born about 1835 in Matilda, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada.
Adeline married Daniel KNAPP on 14 Apr 1857. Daniel was born about 1835.
138 M xi. John SHAVER was born on 30 Jun 1838 in Mountain, Dundas Co., Ontario,
Canada.
NOTE: John went to California, USA, in 1868, and then to Portland, Oregon, USA. He was
married twice and had 3 children. Nothing is known of the wives and children.
