BIOGRAPHICAL: In the book "Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry" by J.G. Harkness, published in 1946, Mutual
Press Ltd., Ottawa, Ont., the following is written about Peter Shaver, on page 150:
Peter Shaver was born on the banks of the Mohawk River, near Johnstown, New York in 1777, where his father
was a prosperous farmer with a large family. At the commencement of the Revolutionary War the father Adam [Ed.
note: this is an error by the author, the father's name was Philip] and his three sons enlisted with the Royal Yorkers
and served throughout the war.
While they were away, the house and farm were plundered and the family left homeless, but the wife and
children were permitted to make their way to Canada through the woods. After great hardships they reached
Ticonderoga where they hoped to get a boat, but the boats were frozen in the ice and they had to proceed afoot
along the shore of Lake Champlain.
The mother carried an infant in her arm, the older boys drew the younger ones in a hand sleigh one hundred
miles till Ile Aux Noix at the head of the lake. They all came to Dundas in 1784, and settled on Lot 15 in the first
Concession of Matilda.
Peter served an apprenticeship as a mill-wright, married in 1799 and engaged in business, mercantile and
lumbering. His store was on the south side of the highway on Lot 14 in the first concession of Matilda, opposite his
residence now known as the Grey Stone Hall, the home now owned and occupied by the Grisdales.
Peter continued as one of the representatives of Dundas [of the Provincial Parliament] for twenty years, retiring
from business in 1848. He became totally blind and it is interesting to learn that even in those years cataracts might
be removed, for an operation to restore his eyesight.

OCCUPATION: Farmer and merchant.
BIOGRAPHICAL: From "Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry", J.G. Harkness:
The Warden for 1853 was Jacob Brouse (1795-1870), Reeve of Matilda. He too, was the son of a Loyalist, a
Royal Yorker. He lived a mile west of the Village of Iroquois and was a successful farmer and merchant and, as
will be remembered, was one of the first Trustees of the Grammar School. When complaint was made to the Board
that one of the pupils (the pupil, by the way, being my uncle, John Harkness) had rather advanced views and was
threatened with expulsion, Mr. Brouse, then Chairman of the Board, suggested that they should pray for him. This
prevailed and nothing more was heard of it. Mr. Brouse was one of the most married man in the Counties, having
had four wives, in succession of course. One of them was a widow named Mills, who belonged to a prominent
family in Montreal and who had two sons, Cephas and Mason. This naturally took Cephas to Iroquois to see his
mother. He fell in love with Nancy, youngest daughter of Jacob, married her in 1858 and settled in Iroquois, going
into the mercantile business. He was soon afterwards joined by his brother, Mason, and C. & M. Mills, for almost
thirty years conducted one of the largest retail stores in the Counties, sometimes employing as many as 15 clerks.
The brothers were inseparable, together visiting the Centennial at Philadelphia in 1876 and Europe in 1881. In
1887, they were returning from a trip to Philadelphia, when near White River Junction, Vermont, the rear part of the
train went through a bridge and Cephus was killed. A few minutes before the accident, Mason had gone forward to
a smoker. This was the disaster in Harry Brooks, the first husband of the late Mrs. Jared Snetsinger of Cornwall

Jared Snetsinger of Cornwall
was killed, Jacob Brouse's son, Dr. W.H. Brouse of Prescott, was prominent in politics and became a Senator.
